Hello,
I have a computer I would like to sell on craigslist. I have a:
Dell Optiplex GX280 SFF
Pentium 4 HT 2.80 ghz
Windows 7 Ultimate
2gb 400 mhz DDR2
40 gb sata hd
MSI RX3450 GPU 256 mb
8 usb 2.0

How much should I charge for the pc?

-Thanks

Solution
If you want to sell the Win7 key, then do that. But tying it to that hardware lessens the value.

I get the Win7 key, but now *I* have to get rid of that useless hardware. Someone looking for a bare, inexpensive, Win7 product key does not want that hardware.

Anyone buying it for the hardware to actually use as a PC does not care if it is XP or Win7.
The operating system is worth more than the hardware. Given how much systems go for in my local area, maybe $50-75. About all its good for is web browsing and light office work.If the OS is retail keep it and install the original OEM os(probably XP) before selling it.

Im just, wondering, why could I only get $40 for the computer? I have Windows 7, which should get me about $100 in its self.

Assume it's the Windows 7 that came with the PC? That Windows is locked to that motherboard, and more specifically, Dell PC's at that, so while buying a new Windows 7 is worth a $100, one locked to a PC is worth next to nothing. I get emails everyday from suppliers selling me PC's as yours above for $40-50 that are off lease corporate PC's. Stores around me sell them for $80-$100, sometimes with a small flatscreen, keyboard, mouse, etc.

If I was looking for a really, really cheap PC, I could get a similar one for $60-70 online, with a warranty.
Most people, especially at this price point, do not factor in the cost of 'Windows'. Many people do not even realize it actually costs anything. It just 'comes with' the computer.

The copy of windows is my own copy. I installed on the computer, hoping I can get a little money of the computer, like $100+, but from what I am being told I'm probably better off just uninstalling windows 7 and keeping the original version of xp on the computer.

Yes. That is the best option. Having Win7 or XP on it will not change the price any. If you can get anyone to buy it.
Still $40.

Or, you could keep it and make a nice Linux firewall appliance for boundary protection.

Then keep your retail copy of Windows 7, putting it on that computer will not get you a dollar over the price of Windows 7. Actually, you will lose money on the deal, you will not get $100 for that PC with Windows 7 on it. The hardware is too old, power-hungry, and slow. Kind of like putting expensive lipstick on a pig -- it's still a pig and it's a waste of good lipstick!

Ok thanks! I will do that :) , and thanks to all of those who also answered my question.
