Hi, i have an AMD fx-8350, GTX 950, 5 hard drives and one ssd. plus a 21 inch monitor. Recently I bought a UPS on Ebay for 10 dollars (really cheap in AUD), its a 1000VA unit. Would it be enough to run my computer and monitor for enough time to shut it down correctly or would I need something more powerful, such as a 1500VA one?

Solution
Yes, 1000va is enough for your PC with the specs listed. 1000va is about 600-670watts.

It should shut down your PC correctly. I have a 900VA APC UPS and it shuts down my PC correctly every morning as we have power cuts daily (at 6am. -10:30am.)

EDIT: If it is not able to sustain your PC for 1-2min of run time then the batteries probably need replacing.

Awesome, thanks for your help

1000va should give between 8 and 24 mins of backup power but that will depend on the load. so yeah you will have enough time to shut a system down and then some.

saying as you have it, test it. you wont damage anything just cause windows to shut down incorectly (much like pressing the power off while windows is running)
just switch the plug off at the wall and time how long it takes before the whole system turns off.
test at both idle and load.
