How much will the r9 490 be.. is it worth the wait

Solution
No way to tell today.
Those who know price or performance are under NDA.
All others are guessing.

A new gen of graphics cards will have either a better top end performance level(expect those to be very expensive)
Or, the maker can use smaller mfg tech to lower their costs.
Regardless, expect the cards to sell for what the traffic will bear.

Do not expect the old versions to plummet in price. Yes, there will be some clearing of old inventory. When that is done, the new retail price of old gen cards may well rise.
That is for those who need an identical card for a sli/cf upgrade.

On the used market, you will see cards sold more on a price/performance basis.

What to do?

If you have a need for a graphics card now, go ahead and buy...
it is worth the wait since when Polaris comes out, the old amd cards will drop in price, or you can get a good steal on a used one. you can look into how great the new architecture is, just search the tesla p100, a partial Pascal gpu, and it already beats the titan x straight on.
or if you want superior performance, then get a Pascal or Polaris later

If you want to hedge your bet a bit, look into the EVGA 90 day free trade up program.
You get what you paid for your current card if you upgrade within 90 days.

However, one thing to remember is that AMD is not just refreshing their chips this time. So Nvidia may not know what precisely to expect, causing both of them to up their game a bit.
