I'm looking to get an x99 platform pc with the 5960x and i wanted to sell my current system to help pay for the new one.

My current system:

Case: Corsair Carbide Series 300R CC-9011017-WW
Motherboard: Mod 1150 ASUS Z97 Maximus VII Hero ATX
RAM: G-Skill 4GB Ripjaws X DDR3 2133 x4
CPU: Intel Core i7 i7-4790K
GPU: Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 DirectCU II 3GB GDDR5
PSU: Corsair Builder Series CXM 750W Modular 80 PLUS Bronze
CPU cooler: Corsair CW-9060016-WW Hydro Series H105 240mm Rad

Most of those parts where bought less than 4-5 months ago except for the gpu and psu which are about a year old.
There are also extra parts i didnt include such as airflow and pressure optimized fans and cd/dvd drive.
Also i won't be selling the ssd and hard drives.

The PC works perfectly fine, I've never done any extreme overclocking/overvolting.

I need a workstation PC instead of a gaming PC due to work and university.

Better sell it part by part. Keep the PSU, RAM & Case. But really i7 4790K could also be used in the Workstation PC. The only real change this PC needs is an upgrade in the RAM. Put a 16GB Kit into it and if you are doing any Rendering or Video editing or 3D Animation rendering, go for a Workstation Card if possible. But really there is not that much drastic difference even if you put a consumer card in it like that you have right now.

There is no need of selling this PC since it has all the components you will find in a workstation PC.

I'm with senseijtitus. For what purpose do you need a workstation PC? What applications are you going to use? My initial thought is just buy a workstation GPU. Unless you need more cores, I don't see the reason to sell your current PC.

4k video editing/rendering, 3DS max, Photoshop, VM's etc

You can do 3D rendering and 4K Video editing + Photoshop & VM with the setup you already have. + a better Graphic card (even a Consumer GC like GTX 980Ti) with additional RAM to support rendering would be more than enough for this rig. Sell only the Graphic Card and with the $ you get from it, add some more to buy a better either a Workstation GC or GTX 980Ti. If possible, also dispose of the RAM you already have and buy either a 16GB or 32GB RAM kit. This would help you to arrange the RAM in Dual Channel or if your motherboard supports, a Quad channel RAM setup to increase its output.

My RAM is 4x4GB, the majority of my time is spent rendering 4k video which can take 2hrs + per video. I've tried enabling CUDA but it doesn't make a noticeable difference. From what i've seen my rendering speed is heavily dependent on the CPU.

Rendering is a CPU Intensive task. But the Ray Trace rendering and calculations are done by GPU cores if you are using a Workstation Card. Ray Tracing calculations are the main part in 3D rendering as you might know since they calculate the rate and frequencies of the light hitting and reflecting from any 3D model you may have created in the software. My knowledge about this is limited to 3Ds Max & a little bit in MAYA. I can surely say that the Workstation cards may help in rendering a little bit smoother. But not faster. Your processor is as much better as it gets for Rendering. So CPU upgrade at this stage is totally unnecessary. Also please check if your RAM Modules are arranged in the Dual or Quad channeling mode. The time on rendering will solely depend on the number of calculations the processor has to perform. This depends on the density of meshes involved. So the time you are getting in rendering is as good as it gets. Even high end servers dedicated for rendering would most probably generate similar results but for a desktop workstation, you have a pretty solid rig there.

You are right. This is what I suggested in the beginning. But this rig is too good to be sold entirely. The processor is as good as he can get for a desktop rendering and 3D animation setup. Only change needed for this rig to get the job done better is an upgrade in the RAM & a better PSU. GPU is okay as far as my experience with 3Ds max and after effects rendering tells me.

Besides, this rig is just 5 months old.
