Usually individual PC areas as needed until all of it won't do what I want to today or parts/software unavailable or not cost efficient.
Commodore 64 from 1984 to 1992, then Apple Performa 400 1992 to 1999, then Win98 450mhz PC 1999 to 2006, then WinXP P4 3.0 2006 to present. I thought a 200GB HD on current system would be plenty, until I started putting my sisters VHS-C tapes (21 of them) onto DVD's. I wasn't really noticing how much drive space this took up after editing & all. Just bought a 300GB external HD for that project alone. Should suffice, but I really won't know until I'm done with Tape 21 onto DVD.

Just had my new rig built a few months back (specs below) but my old PC is an Athlon XP2800+ with 1.5Gb DDR ram , 80Gb ata133 HD, 5900 nvidia card and sb audigy. Pretty much upgraded everything in the box except the floppy disk drive over the 6 years i had it. For the new rig i will probably upgrade the video card in about a year or 2 but think the rest will be fine for at least 3 years for what i need it for.
