Hello.

Just today, I got a GTX 1660 Super, and I am thinking about a processor to go with it. I currently have an i5 6500 in a Z170 motherboard, and I have been wondering what the best way to upgrade my CPU is while being reasonable with the price. Should I get a processor compatible with my motherboard, or should I get a completely new motherboard? If I should get a new motherboard, should I go the AMD route or should I stick with Intel?

Just so you know, I game at 1080p 60FPS, so please don't recommend some i9 processor as I find that very overkill.

Looks like you would have the LGA1151 socket so I would recommend sticking with Intel. It will be more cost effective.

If you don't care for on-board graphics and want to stay in the reasonable range go with the i5 9400f. I own one and its great plus its the newest gen of i5. You cut some $$ when you go with the "f" versions. It would pare great with your new GPU for 1080p gaming.

Link for i5 9400F: $147.99

The best CPU you could possibly put on a 100-series motherboard that may have official support would be the i7-7700k.

You will need a new 300-series motherboard to get anything beyond quad-cores. Two of your best options would be AMD's Ryzen 3600 and, if you can wait about two more months, probably Intel's i5-10500.

You wont get bottlenecked with i7-6700k or i7-7700k on GTX 1660 Super , unless you upgrade the graphics card again.

Someone suggested i5 9400F which is Coffee Lake-S and its true that its physically fits your lga1151 socket but your chipset wont support it without bios modding (adding cpu microcode)
