How small can they really get a transistor?

For the past few years Intel kept making the transistors in the processors smaller and smaller. I remember reading something about atoms being about 1nm big. Wouldn't they reach a limit soon? Also come to think of it, how big is a processor without the heat spreader and the pins, just the silicon?
 

I was wondering why do you have a overclocked CPU when your running with a 550 ti?
