How small can they really get a transistor?

For the past few years Intel kept making the transistors in the processors smaller and smaller. I remember reading something about atoms being about 1nm big. Wouldn't they reach a limit soon? Also come to think of it, how big is a processor without the heat spreader and the pins, just the silicon?

Atomic radii are measure in 0.01-0.2 nm and a bit more, but certainly not as big as 1 nm. I guess theoretically they could scale the transistor to just a few atoms, i.e. less than 1 nm.
