how to access my usb when the computer says it needs formatting? worked fine before

please help. all my work files are stored on my usb. However it has suddenly popped up with a message saying the volume does not contain a recognised file system can anyone explain what this means. thanks

it mean it corrupted, it is a flash drive or external hdd?
