I installed two same 8GB DDR3 1600 total 16 GB ram in my system motherboard is Asus H81M CS and the system is totally unstable with frequent browser crash and BSOD. In the bios there is only 1400 speed is available? If i remove one 8GB stick then it is working fine with single slot 8GB Stick. Is there any way to use both sticks? thanks.

Did you purchase these sticks as a 16GB kit(2 x 8GB)?

Combining sticks, even when specs are identical is not guaranteed to work. RAM are sold in kits to ensure compatibility.

not in a single kit both were in separate containers.

And therein lies your problem. You have learned a valuable lesson and now know that not all RAM is created equal even when the specs. are identical and suggest otherwise.

That's a dual channel board. To be more specific the manufacturer recommends RAM to be installed in pairs. But I tried it with one stick(module) and it worked. Yes, it did. But what you couldn't see was the speed of that single module. The dual channel RAM module works in tandem with the second stick. The stated speed is the effective speed of both modules working in tandem. There was a speed penalty when you had it in single channel mode.

The only fix is buying RAM in a dual channel kit. They have been tested together to ensure compatibility.

i dont have deep knowledge in hardware but got a vague idea what you said I replaced one 8 gb stick with the old 4 gb and it is working fine now. next time will spend more time on the specs and compatibility issues, Thanks for your support.

with ram start with the motherboard vendor qal list. it give you a list of known tested ram. with ddr3 ram there three types out there. older 1.65 ram. the newer 1.5v ram and low voltage 1.35v ram. the older ram on some mb need you to up the ram voltage. on the ddr 3l low voltage ram some mb and cpu wont like it. another issue is how old the bios is. as ram and cpu keep changing there should be small updates to bios code.

I checked the asus support web page and they clearly mentioned that 16 GB is supported by H81M CS motherboards so I believed it and bought those 8GB sticks. I also updated the bios with the latest file they distributed through their site, I think this H81M CS motherboards are sold in different specs, because in most of the solutions for these memmory issue they are showing a different BIOS page with an option for AI tuner clocking, some thing like that and it is not available in my H81M CS motherboard BIOS settings, also there is some other setting called X.P.D profile is also missing. The issue is complex because of the mismatching combinations of different versions, speed, type of boards memory channels and settings etc. anyway now the old 4GB and new 8 GB combination is working fine. Thanks for your support.
