How to apply thermal paste onto CPU for CPU cooling

This tutorial explains it nicely. Just apply a pea-sized amount of thermal compound to the Center of your CPU and install the CPU cooler, tightening the screws evenly.

Do you know what would happen if I accidentally put a bit more than a pea sized dot? Would there be any hardware issues?

Put a dot of thermal paste/grease like shown above and than bolt down your heat sync and fan on top.
