Hi,
we currently had a problem with 2.5 inch external WD drive "My Passport Essential". First it looked it is dead but after disassembly my brother found few problems in the connector and also some easily reparable bad contact so the drive works again.
However inside was some custom drive without direct SATA connector, really bad to backup if the usb part was dead.

However this reminded me the recommendation to rather buy external box + laptop drive (to ensure possible backup outside of the box) than external drive although this solution is mostly more expensive.
I know that I can buy external drive from vendors like A-Data, Verbatim etc. as they do not produce HDDs and so the box will probably contain standard laptop drive by WD, Seagate, Toshiba or Samsung. On the other way the external drives by HDD producers like WD etc. can contain custom HDD made only for this purposes.
Are there any possibilities to buy external drive and avoid the custom HDD inside? Main reason is to be able to get the data when the usb electronics die.
I made a quick comparison of our drives and looks like at least one factor to find out what is inside are the dimensions:
Left one is the above mentioned WD My Passport Essential with that custom HDD, in the middle my brother's Toshiba StorE Steel (believe inside is standard laptop drive) and the last one is Zalman ZM-VE300 box for 2.5 inch drives.
So it looks that I should just look on external drive dimensions and avoid those smaller than the Toshiba (my older WD My Passport has similar dimensions to the Toshiba).
What do you think?
thanks
