Hi all,

I was trying to bridge a VPN to my wifi network via the control center but was given a surprising error message: "You do not have sufficient privileges for configuring connection properties. Contact your administrator."

Because I wanted to get up and running, I then tried an alternate method to achieve my goal (which is connecting an Xbox to a VPN) by changing the sharing properties of my ethernet network, but got another surprising message reading "Internet connections sharing has been disabled by the network administrator."

I do have administrator on my computer, but I was not aware that I didn't have network administrator. I then tried changing the sharing properties of the ethernet connection of a different computer and found I was able to do it.

The machine without network admin is windows 10, and the one with network admin is windows 7 (I know that's a security flaw, that's not the computer I use and those that do use it refuse to update it).

How do I get network administrator privileges on my windows 10 computer? Can I grant it from the computer that does have it?

What make and model router (or modem/router if combined) do you have?

It is the router and ultimately the router's administrator who controls access to the network.

Who has full admin rights to the router? You will need help from that person.

My router is a D-link DIR 868L, which I think is the router optimum hands to you with their internet service. I thought it might come back to there.

You access the router with the optimum account credentials, which nobody in my house remembers at the moment. Of course, it's not linked to my email so I must wait for her to return.

Once I can access the router, do I grant admin privileges from there?

I now have access to the router, and I'm looking through the settings, but I can't find anything labeled as "connection sharing" or "network administration." What should I be looking for?
I think I may be getting severely restricted by the optimum/ altice router manager...

I found a solution to the "Internet connections sharing has been disabled by the network administrator." problem.

I went into Computer Management, then to Services, and changed Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to Startup type automatic and also started it manually.

This allows me to use internet connection sharing, but I have not found a way to enable connection bridging yet.
When I attempt to bridge two connections, I get "You do not have sufficient privileges for configuring connection properties. Contact your administrator," which doesn't make sense to me because this is my home network I'm dealing with.
Any ideas?

I have not use hamachi in a very long time so I am not sure on this. ICS is a really dumb and simple router program. It was designed to share a dialup modem connection and has not been enhanced very much.

I would first get it working to just share the normal ethernet without the VPN. That will mean you have the wireless part setup correctly at least.

ICS needs a very special sharing setting in the adapter. Some vpn clients do not support this. I know people have a similar issue sharing some tethered cell phones and other work fine. Maybe research if hamachi can be used with ICS.

I used ICS with hamachi and my ethernet port connected my system via ethernet and had a friend do the same without luck, which is why I am hoping to resolve the issue I get when I try and use connection bridging instead.

I can use ICS to get internet on the Xbox, but like you implied it would be, it is very slow (so slow the system warns me playing online would be rubbish).

My issue is trying to use connection bridging, which has been reported to work for this purpose. When I try and enable it between any two of my connections, I am given the message "You do not have sufficient privileges for configuring connection properties. Contact your administrator."

Addendum: I typed that my issue is not trying to use connection bridging, I meant to type that my issue is trying to use connection bridging

Try to set the wifi to open with no encryption. Not sure if it is why you get the message.

Wifi bridging is very messy because the protocol is actually designed to prevent it. The mac address of the wifi nic is used as part of the encryption key. This means a device with a different mac address can not pass over the connection....ie the mac of your vpn. There are methods that use 1-1 mac translation but I don't think windows supports that. The other method used by things like repeaters is called WDS that supports mulitple mac addresses. That I know windows does not support.

You maybe better off with a router that support vpn or maybe try a unix OS they tend to be much more flexible than windows is when running as a router.

I might have not been clear enough

My goal is to connect two Xbox consoles that are physically far apart on the same VPN to enable system link, which allows to consoles on the same network to play together (playing online like most people is not an option because it is enabled by a paid service that I don't have). The Xbox does not natively support VPNs, so I am running one on my computer and trying to bridge the VPN's virtual ethernet adapter with the physical one on my computer so I can connect the Xbox to it via ethernet cable. The idea is that a friend or two joins my VPN and also bridges their VPN's virtual ethernet adapter to their physical one and connects their Xbox via ethernet cable.

I can see why a router that supports VPNs or a Unix OS would be a good idea, but if this page is to be trusted, doing it this way should work.

My end goal aside, even if it is not as feasible as I think it is, I would still like to overcome the issue that prevents me from bridging the connections and is the title of my thread, which is the message "You do not have sufficient privileges for configuring connection properties. Contact your administrator." that comes up when I try and bridge my VPN's virtual ethernet adapter and my computer's physical ethernet adapter.

I see I thought you were trying to bridge the wifi connection. Almost everyone I know that uses wifi also uses ICS and not bridge to accomplish this.

If you had a second ethernet connection you should be able to bridge the virtual vpn adapter to the second ethernet.

it becomes extremely messy to even think about bridging the ethernet port that the vpn is running on to a second network. You likely can with vlans but adds a level of complexity.

I don't think you have to actually bridge the ethernet to make this work. If you configure the vpn to allow access to your local devices it should just work. This would be like if you were away from home and wanted to vpn into your local network. I know people do that all the time with hamachi. You should be able to plug your game console into the main router and access it via the vpn. I forget the details it has been many years since I messed with vpn and game consoles, pc have so many more options.

This is exactly what I try to do when windows gives me the aforementioned message and prevents me from doing so.

I'm not really sure what you mean by it should just work, I haven't used VPNs to any significant extent before, let alone on devices that don't natively support them. I also don't want every device connected to my router on the hamachi network (it only supports 5 anyway because I'm using the free version). I want to host the VPN on my computer and connect only the Xbox to it so others can join the VPN on their computers and connect their Xboxs to it. The only thing preventing me from doing it its that when I try to bridge the hamachi virtual ethernet adapter with the physical one on my computer I get the message mentioned before. That is what I need help with.
