How to boost the signal or extend the range of tge router to be able to connect to pick up the free net close to my house?

My Internet service provider keeps having outages. There's a free net a couple of blocks away. Is there something I can use so my router can pick up that signal when my WiFi is down?

a nice out door antenna that is hooked to say a ddwrt router and set as a wireless bridge.

a good antenna should be able to pick it up if it is not to far, speeds might not be that great though

Unless you can add a repeater to the origin of the free wifi signal(which I doubt you have access to), you're out of luck. And not many routers have that much range, the one's that do are surely expensive.

what is this "free net"? is it merely an unsecured Internet connection that you would be essentially stealing from someone else?
