There should be a Fn + F key combination for brightness on the laptop. If you have an older laptop it could also just be an old backlight that needs to be replaced.

Yes, also sometimes the up and down arrow will have the symbol for brightness used in conjunction with the FN key. If you are stuck with it still if you provide the brand and model we may be able to look it up to see which keys specifically. As already mentioned too, it could be dim from age.
