My Specs:

Asus P5Q mobo
C2D 8500 @ 3.0
PSU 350 Watt generic
3 Gig Matched ram
GPU 8800 GT 640 Mb

My Question:

Can I swap out the 8500 dual core and just replace it with a C2Quad 9550 and everythings ok to boot and post?

If not what do I have to do to make it happen?
Thank you all inn advance for your time and effort in helping me with this problem?

Solution
I agree, check ASUS's site for what procs are supported. You might also need a BIOS update for it to recognize quad core, it will state if this is the case.
That was a darn good gaming PC back in 2009 but there isn't much for you to gain now by upgrading it. Even a dual core $50 Pentium can beat that Core 2 Quad even in multi-threaded tasks. I'd say not to sink anymore money into that dinosaur and instead try and get something new. Any money you put into that computer is wasted money.

Well in that case that's great. Here's a video showing how the install process should go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UceIJ_FZRqE You will need thermal compound and a bit of rubbing alcohol to clean the heatsink and cpu. Be extra careful not to bend the cpu pins on the motherboard. When you put the CPU into the socket just sit it on top of the pins. Don't use any force to install the CPU into the socket. There are little notches that you have to line up with the CPU.
