Im wanting to separate mainly my OS from everything else. I changed the location of my Downloads folder from C: to D: , but I noticed some software/programs do not give you the option to specify where you want to install it. Im sure there is a name for that, but Idk what it is. Most give me the option to choose where I want it installed, but occasionally I have no choice.

How or what can I do to fix this?

Downloads or Install?

Downloads through the browser, change that setting in the browser.
Not relocate the /Downloads/ folder.
All my downloaded stuff goes to a whole different system by default, a mapped drive letter that points to a subfolder on my NAS.

Installation?
Yes, some applications do not give you the option to install on a place other than the C.
Basically, live with it.

And in reality, there is little reason to install applications elsewhere.

Well, if you get one of those Dell Inspirons with 256 GB SSD primary drives, it can get full real fast.

My own PC I built has a 500 GB SSD as my primary C: drive and a 2TB secondary hard disk D: data drive that I mapped all the Docs, Downloads, Music, Pics, and Video folders to. I run AudoCAD Architecture and Revit (building information modeling software) on it that I put on the D: drive because, Revit especially, are multi GB installation programs. And then I have a second 2 TB HDD for the CAD and Revit data files.

Right now, after nearly 2 years with this build, both the C: and D: drives are half full. My second HDD, which I mapped as P: drive is only about 1/4 full.

But it's true that some apps just won't install anywhere but the C: drive. MS Office for one.

Actually, for Microsoft office, there is a registries key that you can set that will send your install to a specified folder. And I know exactly why they did this to because too many problems happen when people get creative with their install locations. I do the same thing for our own products at my company, there is a registry key that can be modified with a base path pointing to a different drive and all of our software products will respect that decision and use that base path to install our products correctly. Many customers have this request as well

Even then....most applications don't take up that much space.

A single movie is larger than the entirety of MS Office.
