Hello, I was wondering how do you change the windows startup sound. I have gone into regedit already but you can only use it to change the logon and logout sounds. I really want change the start up sound to the old PS1 start up sound . I know it's not useful in anyway shape or form but it would really make my day if someone could help me out with this. :)

Solution

Just like in Win 8.1, there is no selection for that in Control Panel - Sounds.

So, search for "startup" or "logon"
Replace that Windows Logon Sound.wav with your choice of sounds.

It's in a subfolder of WinSXS

I don't have Windows 10 installed but someone said this works:

a) Right click on Speaker icon in System tray.
b) Click Sound.
c) Click on Sound tab.
d) Choose the event for which you wish to make the change.

That works for everything except logon/logoff, or startup/shutdown.
I just looked.

Ah ok bummer, well replacing .wav files it is then.

I changed the sound but I needed to change the ownership of the folder.

But how to replace the old sound?

Find or create a .wav of what you want it to be.
Name it the same as the file you wish to replace. Windows Startup.wav
Replace the file in that folder.

Recommend you save the original elsewhere first.

Fine so far. I have also deleted the startup.wav with unlocker app/tool. But i cannot place the new startup.wav there. I cannot find a tool which can change the permissions to write (not only read) but i cannot find. Manually is forbidden (from properties). Any ideas?

You probably don't want to be changing permissions inside the windows folder.

Actually I don't mind to unlock this sound folder. but I cannot find a way to do it. I am in lack of other ideas. It will be great if you show me any solution.

This post is kinda old but you can try this solution with "TakeOwnership" to take out all of the security rules on selected files and/or folder.

Download the registry patch, so you'll have this on your right-click context menu.
Now you can edit those files.

Go to https://www.howtogeek.com/274010/how-to-change-the-windows-10-logoff-logon-and-shutdown-sounds-in-windows-10/. That webpage helped me and now I can change the login, logout and Windows startup sounds permanently.
