A fairly simple feature in Windows 7 is to change your sounds (like when you plug in a USB device, get an error, etc), though it isn't very apparent. You can use this to make your computer feel more personalized, or you can use it to make a sound sound right to you.
This will not increase your computer's performance, although it can make it easier for you to use if you recognize the sounds quicker, but mostly it's just a cool thing you can do to feel special.
First, open control panel.
Now, go to "Appearance and Personalization"
Now, click change sound effects
OR
You can right click the sound icon in your taskbar, and click sounds in the menu.
You will see a dropdown menu for you "sound scheme". These different sound schemes all have the same rhythm, but with different instruments/noises. You can mess around with this to find a set of sounds you like.
If you just select a sound like "Device Connect" and select the dropdown menu at the bottom, you can change that event's sound to something else that you feel is more fitting. The sounds you can change them to will be the ones from the theme you selected, so you cannot use combinations of different themes.
Now click apply, and your computer now has custom sounds! You can test this out by inserting or removing a USB device. It may take a while to get used to, but oddly enough it makes your computer seem like YOUR computer.
