Choosing which hero to play can be the most important decision you make when going into a round of Overwatch. Having a good team composition can be what spells victory for your team, while having a bad team composition will almost certainly end in defeat. Here's a few quick steps to keep in mind when choosing your hero.

Step One)Try to play to your strengths.
Ideally, you will learn how to effectively play every hero in the game and be able to choose the one to best suit your team, but more than likely you are going to have your favorites that you are best at. When possible, try to play the champs you are best at, sometimes that is more important than deciding to play a hero you're terrible at just because your team needs it.

Step two)Assess what your team needs, and pick towards that.
This can depend on the map and if you are on the offensive or the defensive as much as what choices your team has already made. For example, if you are on the attack and need to capture a location, Torbjorn and his turret may not be the best choice, even if your team is in need of a builder, in that situation Symmetra might be a better option, since she can build her turrets faster and in more interesting places, or a builder might not even be needed and you might be better playing a sniper who can pick off defenders. The tips in game saying what classes are missing aren't always saying those classes are going to actually be needed!

Step three)Remember that your pick is never final.
Once you are in the game, you might realize the enemy team is built specifically to deal with the hero you have selected, or maybe you notice your team is lacking in something that you could do. When this happens, you can always change your hero by going back to the spawn point.

It will take some time to learn what all the heroes can bring to the fight, it's going to take some time to learn what hero is going to fit in best with the heroes picked by the rest of the team. Most importantly though, there is no wrong choice, it is entirely possible to even go with a full team of the same hero and win! It's just not recommended.
