Hi, I would like to know what is the best and easiest way to clean a CPU. I had the stock cooler and I want to install an h80i.
My CPU is a 4790k, my motherboard a Z97-E and my case a Bitfenix Shadow. Do I need to remove the CPU from the motherboard socket?
Thanks!

Solution
I would just leave the CPU in there, put some 70+% isopropyl alcohol on a paper towel, scrub the OEM paste off, wipe/blow lint off (or use lint-free cloth for cleaning) and that should be it.

Leaving the CPU in eliminates the risk of damaging the socket's pins while there is no CPU in it, putting dirt on CPU pads that might cause trouble later or zapping something with ESD.

Yes, lint-free cloth is the sort of stuff you use to clean glasses.

The paste will ruin your lint-free cloth though, so use a disposable one.

Personally, I simply blow over the CPU to remove the bulk of any lint that might be there if I do not have canned/shop air on-hands and call that good enough.
