How to compress big files.

I have created a backup of my internal storage on my external one which has 1TB and the backup is just over 900gigs. I want to compress the files but all i can manage with 7zip, winrar, etc is just like 15gigs less. what can i do to properly store it? i also have game install files which is also taking up a lot of storage does anyone know how to sue these software properly or do i just have to bite the bullet and get a new hd? which i am really trying to avoid.

there isnt a limit to the size as far as i know but the file isnt compressed by a lot which i actually want to change
