how to connect a tv as a monitor with hdmi

I recently built my gaming pc and I have it on my desk right under my tv that is mounted on my wall. I want to connect it to use as a second monitor bit can't figure out how to do it. I tried connecting a HDMI cable between my pc and tv but my tv didn't pick up a signal. I'm not sure if I need another cable for this to work or what but any suggestions would be appreciated. I have an Insignia tv if that helps at all.

With the second display connected, did you enable the second display in your graphic card's control panel?

If you have a graphics card, both should be connected to it, not the mobo. Not unless you enable the igpu. Monitor vs tv has no difference here.

I only have 1 hdmi port on my graphics card but I have 3 display ports, so I can only connect one monitor through hdmi. Do you know if a display port to hdmi connector would work? I think that might be what I have to do
