How to connect desktop to laptop so laptop is second/extended screen via HDMI cable?

My gaming desktop has Windows 10 and my Asus i3 laptop has Windows 8. I want to connect the laptop to my desktop via my graphics card as a second monitor so I can use 2 monitors for either extended gaming or gaming and work. I have an HDMI cable and my graphics card delivers video input to my monitor via a VGA cable since it only has a VGA cable slot and the normal power cord slot. Is there a way to connect? I have tried all the methods and nothing happened.

No, the laptop should only have outputs not inputs.

Yes. The screen for the laptop is only for the laptop - you can't just use it as a monitor.
