How to connect laptop to tv windows 8

I've recently got a windows 8 laptop. I've tried connecting it to my tv via a vga cable but nothing comes up on the screen. I used to do this with my windows 7 laptop all the time and it worked perfectly. Any suggestions?

Update windows .Automatically detect and install latest best driver and fix all issues.
Update bios.
Update hdd/ssd firmware.
Update Gpu firmware .
Full Scan system with "SUPERANTISPYWARE" Freeware.

What model laptop? Usually there is a function key combination to direct your output to the VGA port. Also make sure you TV is set to receive a VGA signal.
