Question How to connect soundbar

I have been trying to connect a soundbar to my Toshiba tv (mfg 6/11) without any success. I don't have any HDMI-out sockets so I connected the tv and soundbar via an optical cable. I'm not a techie, but the product manual says that is an acceptable method to get audio to the soundbar, There was also an audio output setting that I needed to change from Digital Audio to PCM, too. Despite being able to perform the outlined instructions I have had no luck getting any sound from the soundbar. I will gladly provide any helpful copies from the user guide if anyone has some idea to get this soundbar working. Toshiba model 55G310U mfg 6/11.
