How to connect speakers to monitor?

Hey guys, I have a problem
So I usually connect my pc to my monitor (via hdmi) and connect my speakers to the pc so sound comes out of the speakers because the monitor sound is pretty crap.
But when i connect my ps3 to the monitor via hdmi, sound comes outa the monitor. So i tried connecting my speakers to my monitor, but my monitor has only AUDIO IN, and that didnt work when i hooked it up sooo is there anyway to get around this, so i can play the ps3 on my monitor and have sound coming outa the speakers?

One option would be to connect the speakers directly to the PS3 via the AV multiout connection.
You could also use an HDMI audio extractor to give you a place to connect the speakers

The speakers would need to be self powered and have their own volume control to work this way.
