How to connect to ADTRAN com port with ethernet on lappy using adapter?

My lappy doesn't have serial ports, and I need to log into an ADTRAN 3450 switch.
I do have a USB to Ethernet adapter.
I'm not sure what's required to use something like putty, etc to talk to the switches RS232 port...?
The Manual calls for setting lappy IP to 10.10.10.2 and browsing to 10.10.10.1 , but that ip isn't pingable when I config lappy that way.
Thoughts?

Maybe you are doing it the hard way.

If the manual tells you can access via 10.0.0.1 then that's it, you may have to follow procedure to FIRST reset it to factory though (will erase current configuration).

The hard way then is via console port, and for that need to buy a USB-to-RS232 dongle, if you insist.

ahh I see.. I was assuming that adapter my guy had, was changing USB into (serial)Ethernet topology, but now I think it was if you didn't have Ethernet on a machine, and needed to change USB into Ethernet for networking... .

thanks,
