I am currently doing something that requires the client computer to access information from Windows Server 2008.

For example, if I downloaded a chat software/program on Server 2008, I have to use Windows 8.1 to connect to the server to use the chat software.

Please help, will appreciate your help.

I am still wondering what your question / problem is.

In order for a client to connect to (Windows) Server (2008), said client must present valid username / password (and in some cases, use appropriate protocol) to access server resources. In case of Win 8.1 and Server 2008 (if you want to use file and print services), you must create an user, set a password, and use that user name / password pair to connect to the server.

For your chat software, follow the instruction for that said chat software, you might not need user name / password from Windows, but from that software.

I am currently using Oracle VM VirtualBox. I am doing it for my school project and I am required to download a server-based software so that client computer can connect to the server to use the program.

Is the server and the client on the same machine or different ones? Are they both on the same domain? You will need to provide information regarding the setup if you would like to receive accurate answers.

The server and the client are on the same machine. I doubt that they are on the same domain, how do I check? Sorry bout that as my teacher did not teach me.

If the instructor is not teaching you, then you should probably talk to your classmates. What services do you have installed on your server? What is the exact configuration of your machine with the host operating system and guest operating systems (virtual box)? Again, what is your current configuration and what have you done so far? If you have not started yet, document everything you do, so that you can do it again if necessary.

Essentially you want both the server and any other users that you want on the same domain. The users are allowed access to the server through ADDS. Microsoft Technet is your friend. If you can tell me what you have done so far, I will try to find my documentation from my similar school project.

My teacher doesn't teach so my classmates do not know as well. I have downloaded an accounting software BS Accounting 1 in my Oracle VM VirtualBox Server 2008 and I also downloaded OpenFire, a chat program. This is all I have done so far because I have actually no idea how to proceed. I am trying to figure out how to actually use the program (Accounting and OpenFire) from my computer (Windows 8.1) by connecting it to the server.

The scenario is this: Imagine there is a server in a company and it caters for 30 employees. Each employee have a computer. They have to simply use the computer to connect the server to use the program. We have to research on 2 additional services that are server-based for the employees (for this case, Accounting software and Chat program). In addition when internet is down, it can still be used as well.

So you are running Windows 8.1 on your personal computer with Server 2008 running virtually. You downloaded some software to the server. Are you currently able to connect to the server (login) from Windows 8.1? Does the server have a static IP? Is the server a member of a domain (system properties)? What services did you install on the server (example: ADDS, DHCP, FTP, etc) or were already installed?

Yes I am running Windows 8.1 on my personal computer with Server 2008 running virtually. I am unable to connect to the server from Windows 8.1, how am I supposed to do it? I don't think my server have a static IP and the server is not a member of the domain.

I don't think I know enough to help you. In my server class, we created a virtual client and a virtual server using VirtualBox. I installed ADDS on the server and created a domain. I then made the client a member of the domain and authorized the client through ADDS (or vice versa), so the client could log onto the server. I used DHCP, IIS, and FTP, but I think you need the Application role to run applications off the server.

If you need everything to work even if the internet is down, it won't matter since you are on the intranet.

That's about all I know. Good luck.
