How to convert dvi-d to vga

I need to connect a vga monitor to my computer with dvi-d. I know that there is an active adapter for this, but I don't want to have to pay $25 for it. Could I possibly convert dvi-d to hdmi (http://www.amazon.com/DVI-D-Male-HDMI-Female-Adapter/dp/B004CHATO4/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1412519704&sr=1-7&keywords=dvi-d+to+hdmi), and then use an hdmi to vga (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Input-Adapter-Converter-Laptop/dp/B007KFVQXI/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1412479198&sr=1-1&keywords=sanoxy+hdmi+to+vga)?

Is the output on your PC only DVI-D or is it actually DVI-I? Does it have the 4 pins off on one side of the connector? If so, then you can just use one of the super cheap DVI-VGA converter blocks, if it doesn't then you need an active converter. Converting DVI to HDMI to VGA still hasn't taken care of the Digital to Analog issue that is the core of your problem, somewhere along the way you need something with circuitry to turn that Digital video signals in DVI and HDMI into an Analog video signal for VGA.

Is the output on your PC only DVI-D or is it actually DVI-I? Does it have the 4 pins off on one side of the connector? Forget about the DVI for a moment.
Isn't the HDMI signal a digital video signal too?
If the second adapter can convert an HDMI signal to VGA, then the OP shouldn't have a problem, as one can passively convert DVI-D to HDMI, both being digital signals.

If he meant one of these it wouldn't be converting anything, just shape changing and relying on the GPU to swap the DAC in to output an analog signal.

Going from dvi-d to hdmi then using an active hdmi to vga adapter should work.
