How to convert VGA to HDMI for a dual monitor set up

My monitor has vga, but my new laptop only has hdmi. I'd like to hook them up for a dual monitor setup. I bought an inexpensive hdmi/vga converter but it didn't seem to work. I was reading about how it might require something stronger, so I'm wondering what the best product would be?

of course it doesn't work. HDMI is only digital, and VGA is only analog. converting will cost money. best solution is to buy a monitor with DVI or HDMI input, since you can easily convert HDMI to DVI (just a cable).
