I installed Win 7 Pro on an XP computer intending to replace XP with 7. To recover disk space I deleted the Windows.old folder. Now when the computer boots I get a screen asking user to select the previous system or Windows 7. But there is no previous system--just some scraps apparently, that seem to load with the boot manager. If one selects the first choice, it just produces a blank screen.
I've tried running disk clean-up in Win 7, as well as a popular commercial Windows maintenance program, but nothing has been able to remove whatever it is that is persisting at offering the choice of logging into the old system.
I'd like to be able to do this with some simple edit of a configuration file rather than re-installing the o/s and its nearly 200 updates.
Any help will be appreciated.
