I am currently recovering data from a 1TB toshiba internal hard drive (that's connected via a USB external casing and a power supply adapter ), with the help of testdisk from Parted Magic (v. May 2019) through a bootable 4GB pendrive (attached to a pc) and copying the recovered files to a WD My Passport 4TB, which is connected to the pc via a usb hub.
Last night, as the files were being copied via testdisk , I opened up some other programs in search of a wifi application and also ran a second instance of testdisk to recover some urgent files. Doing this caused the PC to freeze. The keyboard became unresponsive and while the cursor was moving via the mouse, it couldn't open or close anything, as if the mouse clicks were not being accepted by the system, and so I could not disconnect the hard drives.
(Could this have happened because there is no HDD connected via the motherboard? The task manager read the RAM correctly as 16GB).I left them on the way the way they were overnight, hoping that the freezing would resolve on it's own by the next day.
Checking this morning and the situation remains, and the mouse cursor has also become unresponsive. My only option left is to manually power down the pc. Will doing this hurt the two external hard drives? Would it be better to switch off the power supply of one of the toshiba casing and disconnect the My passport from the usb hub while the pc is on? Is there a better way to go about this?
Could really use your urgent help and advice.
