How to end this game

I'm at the very end, and I'm trying to shoot the core with the energy gun.
I've tried maybe 50 times so far, and no matter what, I can't win. I don't
even bother try taking out the ships, because the game ends long before they
do any significant damage to me. It seems that I only have about 10-15
seconds after I get up to the top level to take out the core before the game
ends. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I don't think I can shoot any faster.

You should have tagged this with a spoiler label.
Anyway, you have to get to the top quicker, destroy the ships, then move to
the SIDE, where you get a line of sight to fire on the rotating metal
peices, you have to keep firing till they are all dislodged.

Stay to the right and blast the two gunships. Then, go all the way to
the left and keep firing energy balls at the core. Knock off all the
rotating panels, then keep firing at the core. Game over!

You have to get to the top faster. Then you'll have time to take out
the ships plus destroy the core. FASTER TO THE TOP, remember.

Are u sure u are shootin gthe right bits?...don't shoot the accending
ball...shoot the rotating plates of metal....

Odd - I thought the end was a almost too easy compared to Nihlanth.
You have to get to the top faster.
Others seem to have taken out the ships first - I took out the core panels
first - somehow the ships weren't too much trouble and I thought that that
would do it - I still had to finish the ships to win though so I suspect I
did it "wrong".

I've never wasted my time firing even one shot at the ships. Just line
yourself up so that you can quickly GG the plasma balls and fire them at
the rotating shields and ultimately hit the pod when it is in position.
The time that you have to do it is short and the ships are best ignored.

That's the key, I guess. I messed around too much before getting to the top
level. I'll have to do it over again.

Nothing changes at the hardest level. Ignore the ships.
