How to extend desktops with this setup.

I have a gateway DX4850-45. It has an HDMI output and a VGA output. I want to be able to have an extended desktop using only the VGA slot, not the HDMI.

How do I do it?
What do I purchase?

If I did use the hdmi port and had one screen hooked up could I have extended screens even though they are completely different outputs?

There is no problem with using different type of outputs.
You just need to connect a second monitor.
Pick a second monitor that has an input that matches the unused output on your motherboard.

Right click on your desktop and select screen resolution.
You can select extended desktop and rearrange how they look.

Is there any type of adapter that would utilize the VGA port to display to two monitors. An adapter/device that will allow me to extend the desktops not only duplicate them? Thank you.

To extend the desktop, you need two different cables to go to two different monitors.
If you want the same image on each monitor, you will have that choice.
