1-click to detach would be good

A) how do we know if a stand is detachable?

- like is this one? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NZTKOQI

B) does the physical dimensions shown always include in the measurement the stand or not?

C) do you know of any displays that physically auto-rotates from horizontal to vertical (portrait) when pressing a button?

The thing I look for, to determine if a monitor has a detachable stand is a reference to a VESA mounting option. That says the monitor can use a standard bracket on the back. To do that, generally the stand has to be removed. It may require a screwdriver to remove the stand, but if you are using an alternative mount, a screwdriver should be available.
If you scroll down one of the pictures shows the monitor lying face down with the stand removed and the recessed VESA mounting area.

A) Detachable stand:

If at all possible go to a store and physically look at the display. "Hands on" so to speak.

Barring that then the next option is to visit the manufacture'rs website. Look for the applicable product User Guide/Manual. Read carefully including all fine print. "Detachable" may be correct but the display may not be useable without the stand. I.e., the Amazon product link does not appear to have any VESA mounting.

E.g.:

VESA Mounting

Google for other similar links and explanations.

Read product reviews and also any manufacturer based FAQ's and Forums. Find out what verified user's are saying and asking about the display.

B) No certain way to know per se. You must read the specs and fine print carefully. There should be some measurements with respect to both the screen size and the overall height with stand attached. If the stand permits some height adjustment then there should be some range of values presented.

C) If you mean a display that physically rotates from landscape to portrait via a motor none that I am aware of. There may be some that permit rotation after pressing an "unlock" button of some sort. I would be wary of any such products - especially because of likely cable management problems. May not end well if a cable gets hung up or stuck.

No, you're the one causing the confusion.

The monitor in your link comes with a standard desktop stand that must be attached before use. It attaches into the square recess in the back of the monitor. That recess is where the VESA mount is attached with 4 screws (already present). The VESA mount is not included with the monitor. You detatch the desk stand then attach the VESA bracket using the 4 screws from the back of the monitor. I don't know of any monitors off the top of my head that do include the VESA bracket.

'you're the one causing the confusion.'

how could you accuse someone else of 'causing' confusion

when the confusion already exist

someone else could say that about you, and you would presumably not appreciate that

so should you be accusing other ppl?

when the confusion already exist

On every monitor I've purchased in the last several years, the "stand" would be attached after you take it out of the box.
It does not come already connected.

If you do not with to use the included stand, simply do not attach it, and use whatever deskmount thing you've bought that is VESA compatible.

VESA is simply a standard hole spacing, bolt diameter and thread, and weight limit, for displays.
75mm, 100mm, 200mm...

If the stand or part of the stand is attached to the monitor when you take it out of the box, a screwdriver or hex head will remove it easily.

display industry is insane... and such a mess

Not really, two types of designs, VESA standard with 4 mounting holes on the back and whatever the vendor wants to do. That last one is usually on the cheaper stands without swivel/tilt ability, they usually connect to the bottom of the screen instead of the rear like VESA mounts are. Almost every monitor has a "detachable stand" since they are sold in the box as the main screen and stand separate and the consumer attaches the stand. So to remove the stand, just do the opposite of what you did to attach it.

To find out if the monitor has a VESA connection or stand type included with it, look at it or the read the specs.

This was all explained pretty well in the first two posts.
