Basically, if you use backup software to create the backups (something I never do) then you cannot access the said backups directly as individual files - - - you have to use the "Restore" function of the same backup software.
That's why I don't use backup software - - I create my backups manually (drag/drop or copy/paste) so that the backups list is identical to the original files list, and can be accessed by me directly.
The only time I do use backup software is for creating (and restoring) disk images, but never for file backups.
