As you would expect from any significant OS update, the ease at which it completes depends on the stability and compatibility of the computer it is being installed on. Drivers and third-party software have always proved a challenge for Windows and Windows 10 is no different. Fix driver or software compatibility issues with Windows 10 Anniversary Update
First let’s check drivers and then move on to other software. If you were lucky, Windows Update would have told you what device or piece of software was causing the problem.
1. Right click the Windows Start button and select Device Manager.
2. Right click on the device in question and select ‘Update Driver Software’.
3. Select ‘Search automatically…’ and allow the process to complete.
If the update was successful, retry the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. If Windows couldn’t find an updated driver, go to the manufacturer’s website and download and install the latest drivers and then retry.
If the error didn’t tell you which device or piece of software it was having trouble with, we have to update everything.
1. Right click the Windows Start button and select Device Manager.
2. Check for yellow triangles next to any device. Update drivers if there are triangles.
3. Download and install all the latest graphics, sound and motherboard drivers.
4. Switch off any third-party firewall and antivirus applications.
5. Make sure Windows Firewall is active.
6. Retry the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
If all else fails, perform a clean install using the Microsoft media creation tool.
