How to fix MBR/GPT or understand what partition table my HDD is using?

Hi

My External HDD stopped working recently. I was beginning to think it was quite old and was about to give up on when I realised I stored some very important research documents from undergrad in it and failed to create a back up for the back up (which I usually do). So here I am desperately trying to understand the usage of Testdisk to try and recover any possible data.

When I plug the hdd to my pc, I can see it detected in my computer but I cannot access it. Naturally I tried to look up the disk management page and I found that the file system turned RAW! Upon some creative and time-wasting reading on the internet, it is my understanding that a file system, when it misses the MBR/GPT turns into a RAW system but data could still be recovered using tools like Testdisk.

However, one of the steps involved in Testdisk is to select the partition table my HD is using. I gambled and selected MBR and tried running and found that no partition was detected. I did the same with GPT next and found the same result! I am at my wits end now and decided to post here for a possible solution.

My HDD specs are a Seagate Freeagent 1TB (purchased in 2009). As I have mentioned before I do realise it is quite old and I just want to recover the data so that I can store it in a different hard disk.

Any leads and help will be appreciated.
