Hi
I have a P6X58D-E motherboard with 2- 2gb mem strips Win XP, pro, SP3
what is the best amount of mem I should install

You have enough already. Most xp users have the 32 bit version, which recognizes about 3.25 gb of ram tops. Get the 64 bit windows 7 first. The pro or ultimate versions will run old xp software. I find them on craigslist as low as $75 unopened.

i think you need 3 sticks for it to run properly in triple channel mode with that motherboard, so you need 3 sticks of ram in it anyway, your current amount is alright though.

I have the same board but the "D" version. X58 is triple channel DDR3. Get another stick exactly the same brad and model number or buy a new triple chn. set. If you plan to move to win7/64 and are buying a new set might as well go for a 3X4 (12g) set as the prices are about the same as a 3X2 set. The XP 32 bit can only see a theoretical 4g but the video memory counts towards this total. So if you have a 1g card the OS is only advantaged by about 3 of the 4 gig. The 64 bit OS would be able to access all the system and video memory installed.
