how to fix "shadowing" of a printout from a HP LJ 5N

I recently installed a new cartridge for my laserjet 5N printer, and
all printouts have a faint copy of previous things that were printed on
the page. It is especially bad when I print text.

Does anyone know a means to correct this? Is it the cartridge or is it
something else? Is it just a faulty cartridge?

Stephen:

Most likely it is the Toner cartridge. You could take the cartridge out.
Carefully open the shutter and visually inspect the drum surface. If you
see toner residual on teh drum, it is your Toner cartridge. Hopefully you
could get a Free replacement. If you still have the old cartridge, use it
to do a quick test.

Almost certainly the cartridge, the drum is not being cleaned of residual toner
by the wiper blade (part of the cartridge in this printer).

Thank you for the quick reply and advice. I did this and I see no
residue on the drum. It looks blue with no dark spots on it at all.
Is there any way to "clean" the drum to see if it is the problem?

Hmmm if you clean the drum you will introduce some issues (it needs to be
removed, cleaned with Isoproplyl alcohol and lubricated with a special powder
and you need to keep your fingers away from it)....yes it can de done easily on
this cartridge but if the wiper blade has failed then cleaning the drum will
probably only fix the problem for one page.
If you clean it and don't lubricate it you may find that the drum binds when
re-installed in the printer. By the way, it can be very difficult indeed to see
"very" light ghosting on the drum.
Did the old cartridge do this? If not then return the new one to the seller if
you can for a replacement. Is the new cartridge a remanufactured one or an
original HP or Canon cartridge?
If you decide to clean the drum and risk the binding issue I will send you
instructions for drum removal.
