How to fix windows 7 black screen before login

am having a black screen before log on

my gut feeling is that you have two display outputs and the default one on boot is not the one you have your screen plugged in to.
Also when the BIOS screens are displayed they are often too fast for your display to sync so you don't see them or they just flash for a fraction of a second.
What id your graphics card/motherboard/display connection type eg DVI, HDMI, DSUB?
