Windows Movie maker hasn't recieved an udpate in a few years, and so stability is lacking with newer versions of Windows. Until Microsoft issues a fix, it's not uncommon for people to encounter issues with playback of their projects using Windows 10 or Windows 8 (or 8.1). These simple steps, which take less than a minute will fix the issue with sound and picture playback in Windows Movie Maker.
Step 0: Close Windows Movie Maker if it's open.
Step 1: Open File explorer. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery (you can copy/paste this, or follow the video at the bottom)
Step 2: Right click MovieMaker.exe and click Properties
Step 3: Click the Compatibility tab, Compatibility Mode, Check the "Run this program" box, select Windows 7, Click OK
That's it! The next time you open a new or existing Windows Movie Maker Project, your audio and video will have returned. Now you can get on with making some great videos.
