How to get 120hz refresh rate on a hdmi monitor? Also when looking do i look for 60hz monitors or 120hz monitors

If you're going to use HDMI as the medium, I'd look at 60hz monitors. If you'll be using dual link DVI or Displayport, then a 120hz monitor might be ok. Depending on WHAT the system will mainly be used for and what level of hardware you have, ie, your graphics card and configuration and whether you'll be using it for video, applications or gaming mostly.

HDMI 2 is very confusing, better off staying with Displayport 1.2a/Dual Link DVI for 4k or 1080p 120hz.

Only graphics cards that have HDMI 2 are the GTX970/980/TitanX. AMD's latest offerings remain at HDMI 1.4a and they recommend also to stay with DP.

4K HDMI 2 Monitors have only just recently started to surface and are pretty expensive; http://www.pcworld.com/article/2910360/hdmi-20-finally-appears-in-a-pair-of-viewsonic-4k-monitors.html

Even though HDMI 2 has the bandwidth for 4k @ 60hz, theres no guarantee the monitor will allow 1080p @ 120hz.
