Hello everyone. I live in an apartment complex and I noticed that I have 802.11n internet while some of the neighboring signals have 802.11ac. I do indeed have a 802.11ac compatible router, so my question is did my neighbors pay to upgrade their internet and that's why they have AC or is there something I need to do myself to get AC instead of N? Thanks.

Solution

That depends on your specific router.
In mine, this is where to change it:

Look in the user manual for yours.
Your wireless stuff has nothing to do with your account with the ISP.

802.11ac has a theoretical performance benefit over 802.11n. However, that is solely between your PC and the router.

You have 802.11n, because the WiFi adapter on your device is 802.11n. You could change that out for a different one, but that will not change your performance talking to the outside world.

My wireless adapter says it supports AC connection though:

Then look at the settings in your router. What is it broadcasting?

According to my Netgear Genie it is broadcasting in N.

Then there ya go. Can you change it to ac?
This will only potentially change the connection speed between you and the router. Has nothing to do with the outside world.
And if you have multiple devices that talk to that router....you might have to change all of them as well.

That was my question from the beginning, sorry if it wasn't clear. I knew it was running in N and my question was how to change it to AC or if that required higher speed internet.

Ohhhhhhh. I used the user manual like you said and logged in to my router online. I guess my router has two signals, one for AC and one for N. So the other AC signal I saw was actually ours too lol. Thanks so much for putting up with me, you've been a great help!
