How to get past FAT32 limit for PS3 backup?

I'm upgrading the stock 120gb hdd to a 500gb hdd, but if I can only use FAT32 and it has a 32gb limit, how can I backup all my data? Most upgrade guides just never mention this as if it doesn't exist.

I made 4 30gb partitions and a single 120gb NTFS partiiton, but it still said "Not enough storage." Also, you can't select what to save/backup.

Every guide on upgrading the hdd says to format to FAT32 and nobody mentions the size limit even when they directly mention the Slim model. Also, when I do try to backup the data with a 30gb partition formatted to FAT32, the PS3 still doesn't recognize it.

Any Linux Live CD/DVD can be used to do the deed.

You can do it from cmd as well. I don't have any to recommend.
