How to get the best out of an AMD dual core?

It's just a temporary setup until I'm able to buy something much better, but until then I'd like to know what can I do to get the best out of it?

It's an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and I've tried overclocking it which takes it up from 2.5GHz to 2.7GHz but the processor gets actually slower that way. So, what can I do to get the best out of it?

By the way I've got 4GB of DDR2 RAM and an nVidia GT630.
My PSU: 450W

Overclock it above 3 GHz.
Don't forget to monitor the temperature using HWMonitor.
And also use Prime95 to stress the CPU for stable overlock.

use crucial memory advisor to read your system see if the system can take more memory. if it can go to 8g of ddr2 look on ebay for some used ram to add to your pc. or look online for some cheap ram.
