How to get the video from DVD-R disk (mpeg2?) into MovieSh..

I dubbed VHS home movie onto a DVD-R (using a borrowed Sansui recorder)
for archiving the raw video and thinking I would be able to put the
disk into my DVD drive(DVD-RW) on my computer and be able to easily
access the video to edit in MovieShaker.

Well, I can't figure out how to get the video from the DVD-R into
MovieShaker for
editing.

I do have a firewire port that I use to connect to a digital camcorder.
That
works great for capturing video in MovieShaker.

Ideas?

One idea I have is getting a Sony RDRVX500 DVD recorder deck that has a
firewire
port. Does any one know if it would work to play the DVD-R on this
deck and
capture in MovieShaker through the firewire?

Help please.

A DVD drive on FireWire is essentially the same as a DVD drive on your
IDE bus - it's still a disk drive, not a camera, so it won't change
anything.

The problem is likely to be that MovieShaker is not designed to read
the .vob files on a DVD. Or maybe it can, but only through an "Import
DVD Files" or similar command, if it has such a command (I don't know
the program).

Gino, thanks for the reply. So really all I probably need is some
software
that could rip the .vob files off the DVD and covert them to a file
type (ie .avi)
that is accepted by Movieshaker.

Sound like it would work?

That sounds right, but remember, I have no idea what Movieshaker is
about.

Some editors/authoring programs (TMPEGEnc Author comes to mind) have a
menu item to "Import DVD Video", which will do the trick. Some don't.
Others might just read the VOBs directly, I'm not sure...

Also, some software will work with MPEGs directly, so VOB to MPEG could
perhaps work for you.

I am no expert on how to convert VOBs to AVIs or MPEGs, so I'll just
point you to http://www.videohelp.com.

Then you have to browse a lot to find what you need to know! videohelp
often has step-by-step instructions - I just used one set yesterday to
rip some audio off of a DVD made by a set-top video recorder.

There are other sites too, but that's all I know.
