How to improve ingame FPS while recording gameplay? Will additional drive help?

I have an ssd drive that I am using for gameplay recording. I am using external recording device not to overload my laptop with recording.

However, I see that ingame fps drops periodically (Every few minutes for a few seconds). Is that possible that my SSD has problem with playing the game and recording it at the same time? Will the use of additional drive for video recording solve the problem? What kind of drive should I use? Are there external drives that will be well-suited for that at all?

Overall computer speed will affect this, not just the drive speed. Using an external drive is bad unless it's eSata, and possibly USB3. USB2 has pretty slow transfer speeds, you want the fastest drive interface you can get. Using a 7200 rpm or an SSD drive for your external will also minimize any bottlenecks. Many external drives use 5200 rpm hard drives.
