How to improve performace on vista

I have Dimension DIME521 32 Bit with AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500 + 2.20GHz 1GB.

How do I improve the performace ?? I've talked to some people and some say I should increase my RAM.
Are their other options ???

Increase ram and make sure that indexing is turned off.
