Like I said in the first post it would be good to install more memory. As for installing Windows XP, I really meant it would be better for everything. I question if there is a single task he can do which won't be faster on Windows XP than on Windows 7 given his limited hardware. Granted, Windows 7 has a lot of nice features and is fast and works well but its still more...
Well in terms of hardware many things can be done, but by the sounds of it your biggest need is probably more RAM. 1GB is extermely low.

After that, you can use virtual memory to help a little, close all background programs while playing the game such as antivirus programs, and setting the graphics settings on the game as low as possible.

I don't think reinstalling an older OS just for the sake of one game which probably won't run anyway due to the other hardware is very good advice.

If it came down to just a memory issue then buying more would make far more sense.

*The most important information, what GPU you have is not here. This laptop had either the GMA 950 or NVidia 7800M. Either way, they're both fairly old but the GMA950 wouldn't have a chance of running Minecraft.

Granted, Windows 7 has a lot of nice features and is fast and works well but its still more resource demanding than Windows XP and when the programs he runs has to fight the OS for resources there isn't anything he does which won't suffer.
